Solar Cells – Power and Speed Combined

The majority of semiconductors found in today’s electronics are composed of crystalline. On the other hand, organic semiconductors are made mainly of molecules which are carbon-based. Less is required to make them in comparison to conventional semiconductors. An organic photovoltaic cell (solar cell) could take merely months to produce as much energy as was needed to build it, whereas a conventional photovoltaic cell would take years to do the exact same thing.

When it comes to organic semiconductors, it is a possibility to make flexible, transparent molecules. Molecules with certain targeted properties are being created – for instance, the ability to transform a plain transparent pane into a solar panel, screen and window.

But it isn’t exactly easy to create a solar panel that also acts as a window. The window/solar panel has to allow people to see in and out of it, and it has to make electricity and absorb light. At Colorado State University, individuals are working hard to make this happen. Very forward-thinking persons have realized they can make molecules which only absorb infrared light and UV light. Filtering out infrared light can end up saving when it comes to energy usage and air conditioning expenses.

In order to put together a smart window, one would need to deposit a layer of organic semiconductors to generate electricity from sunlight, and another layer of organic semiconductors to emit light. While the aforementioned technologies do exist, they are not available at this time to buy.
