Tesla is currently building a solar rooftop on top of their Gigafactory outside of Spark, Nevada. Once the 70-megawatt system is finished it will be the largest ever in the world thus far. This is not something that the company released or said they were doing, an aerial image posted from the website Building Tesla showed the rooftop of the Nevada factory being built.

The largest solar rooftop currently is 11.5-megawatts in India and it can power over 8,000 homes, so just imagine how much this solar rooftop can power.

Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk posted on Twitter in 2016 that the future of the Gigafactory is going to be 100% renewable energy, in the near future as part of the billionaire’s plan to stop using fossil fuels as an energy source.

“Elon Musk said on his verified  account @elonmusk
“Should mention that Gigafactory will be fully powered by clean energy when complete & include battery recycling.”

Tesla also released a statement back then stating, “GF1 is an all-electric factory with no fossil fuels (natural gas or petroleum) directly consumed… We will be using 100 percent sustainable energy through a combination of a 70-megawatt solar rooftop array and solar ground installations. The solar rooftop array is ~7x larger than the largest rooftop solar system installed today.”

The Gigafactory is where Tesla makes the lithium-ion batteries that power their cars, and the factory is going to be responsible for the company’s goal of producing a mass market of electric cars. Despite, Tesla not being a profitable company they are valued as the most valuable car company. It mostly has to do with the style and marketing presence that the company brings to the table, but also has to do with this Gigafactory, which has helped Tesla own the majority of the electric vehicle market.

This is the first Gigafactory that Tesla plans to build and the second one is going to be built in Buffalo, and no one knows where the 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th factory is going to be built. The current factory is not 100% powered by renewable energy because the factory is being built in phases so the company can continue to manufacture the batteries at a high-powered level. This is to help

The building is expected to be completed by sometime this year. The building is already one of the largest structures ever with a footprint of 1.9 million square feet and houses 4.9 million square feet of operating space across several different floors.

Tesla confirmed in a statement that, “And we are still less than 30 percent done.”
Once the Gigafactory is fully built it will produce over 35 GWh per year of lithium-ion battery cells annually, which according to the firm is “nearly as much as the rest of the entire world’s battery production combined.
